No matter where you’re starting from, Prework is meant to build your foundational knowledge and prepare you for success in the course.

First up in this course are Python and SQL. You’ll learn to distill messy, real-world datasets into analytical insights and create interactive data visualizations.

Next, you’ll move beyond the “data” and into the “science” of data science. You will use scientific computing tools in Python, including NumPy, pandas, and SciPy to produce publication-quality, reproducible data reports.

In this phase, students gain experience with artificial intelligence by using statistical models to make predictions about unseen data. Students start with inferential modeling via multiple linear regression and transformations of linear models. Next, they learn about object-oriented programming with scikit-learn, and then move on to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence theory, including concepts such as data leakage, overfitting, and regularization.

Once students have a strong foundation in artificial intelligence from the previous phase, they are ready to move on to advanced AI models, deployment, and model interpretability. Some of the models have interfaces in scikit-learn similar to linear or logistic regression but more complex artificial intelligence algorithms underneath, such as k-nearest neighbors, random forests, clustering, and principal component analysis. Students also learn how to build artificial intelligence models for additional types of data, such as text data (also known as NLP or natural language processing). Further, students learn about the following two artificial intelligence models recommendation systems and deep learning with neural networks. To round out the phase, students learn how to quantitatively interpret model results and how to deploy artificial intelligence models with pipelines.

The course finishes out with a capstone project. You’ll use everything you’ve learned to work through an independent machine learning project and prepare to highlight it in your professional portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions

Each data science bootcamp varies — they teach you different skills, languages, disciplines, all in different ways and styles — but generally the term “data science bootcamp” means an accelerated learning program that helps students learn the skills they need to become data scientists.

Data science bootcamps offer a lot of opportunity for anyone looking to break into data science. Though different bootcamps and courses vary, most of them have one goal: to help you learn the skills you need to become a professional data scientist.

Your responsibility is to find a course that teaches you the right skills in a style that aligns with your learning style. That’s why, at Flatiron School, we offer courses full-time and part-time, on-campus and online.

If you have a clear vision into your career ambitions, find a course that teaches you the math skills & languages and other data science skills that align with those ambitions. If you do your research well and attend the right place that works for you, then attending a bootcamp is definitely the right choice.

Basically, if you want to become a data scientist, then good bootcamps — and especially Flatiron School — are a good choice for you.

If you consider “working” to mean that a bootcamp helps you land a new data science job and career, there is a lot of proof that our courses work.

But if you want to just dabble in some data analytics but aren’t looking to switch into a data career, then perhaps a data science bootcamp isn’t the right option for you. Bootcamps take a lot of commitment, time, and discipline to excel at — it’s the type of commitment that would make sense for someone who wants to start a new career, but probably not for someone who’s just interested in learning a couple of new skills or hobbies.

But if you’re looking to start a career in data science, then good data science bootcamps are a good and efficient route to pursue that ambition.

We don’t require you to have prior experience to apply for the Data Science program. Our admissions requirements are being at least 18 years old, having a high school diploma, a GED or equivalent credential, having a native or highly proficient fluency in English, and completing the admissions process.

Before joining your cohort on Day 1, you will have to complete around 40 hours of coursework called Prep to learn the basics of data science so you are prepared to get started straight away.

On-campus programs are 15-weeks long, and are held full-time and you are expected to be on campus for each day of class from 9am – 6pm local time. The Live program is also 15 weeks, but rather than going to a campus, you’ll be logged on learning remotely full-time. Both on-campus and Live programs monitor attendance daily. The Flex program gives students up to 60 weeks to complete the curriculum, and offers the most flexibility day to day. Students enrolled in Flex programs must attend 10 check-ins in order to be eligible for graduation but are not otherwise required to attend live instructional activities.

The price of our courses reflect our unique approach to learning and support. There are many free resources that can help you learn any discipline, but given the complexity of the topic they can be difficult to navigate independently. Furthermore, students often rave about the camaraderie they establish with instructors, other students, coaches, and alumni – all valuable networking opportunities when it comes to a job search. Our courses and support after graduation are built specifically to provide the structure and community that’s required to be successful.

As for our more traditional competitors – those who are priced similarly and offer live instruction – most haven’t been around as long as Flatiron School, so they may not have the same depth of expertise, employer partner relationships, or alumni network.

The first step is to fill out a written application. Once submitted, you will receive prompts from the admissions team to schedule an interview and take a 15 min aptitude assessment. During the interview a member of the admissions team will learn about your learning needs, career goals, and help you decide whether the program is the right fit for you. If you passed your assessment, we will give you the admissions decision after your interview.

You have a few options in terms of financing your enrollment in one of Flatiron School’s courses. See all of your options on our Tuition & Financing page.

We also offer initiatives that can help to offset the cost of tuition on our Scholarships and Diversity Initiatives page.

The Flatiron School Career Services team exists to help get you hired. You’ll receive guidance on how to:

  • Ace your behavioral and technical interviews
  • Grow your network of tech professionals
  • Connect with Flatiron School employer partners
  • Negotiate your salary
  • Optimize your job search using AI
