Curriculum

Curriculum

Master the basic building blocks of the web and become fluent in the languages that make the web beautiful.

Topics Covered

  • HTML5
  • CSS3
  • Media queries
  • Responsive design
  • Cross-browser compatability

Our online courses are designed to be driven at your own pace, whether that be 5 hours per week, or 80.

To accomplish this flexibility, our curriculum made up of stackable building blocks called Lessons, each of which teaches a bite-sized skill in 5-30 minutes, so that you may save your progress effortlessly. Lessons consist of lectures, readings, videos, quizzes, and interactive coding challenges called Labs, where you put theory into practice.

Unit 1: Web Fundamentals

Learn how the web works, site planning, wireframes and HTML fundamentals. You’ll begin to create page content and familiarize yourself with the basic elements of HTML.

Unit 2: Styling Site Content

Become familiar with forms, tables, and iFrames. Dive into HTML5, discovering new elements that accomplish exciting effects. Finally, learn how to use CSS for styling elements, bringing your code to life.

Unit 3: Page Layout

Learn how to lay out a complex site with ease. Build your own grid system and have full command of positioning your content.

Unit 4: Responsive Design

Learn how to build sites that adapt to any screen size and resolution, from mobile phones to desktop computers.

“You start with a reading about a concept, wherein Flatiron gives you examples, tell you things to watch out for, show you ways to solve coding challenges, and provides additional resources. After the reading, you’ll usually have a lab where you put what you learned into practice. Everything just keeps building.

I have a clear path for learning. I trust that Flatiron instructors know what they’re talking about and they have a really good track record of teaching people to code. They lay out that path for you so I don’t have to spend my time questioning what I should be learning. A lot of people have put a lot of work into building Learn.co and maintaining its community.”

Instructors

Instructors

As an online student, you have access to the same experienced faculty that our NYC students do.

We believe that teaching is a craft. Having a practitioner give a one-hour lecture is one thing. But if you want to master a subject, an incredible teacher is invaluable. No matter how much you love a topic, if you don’t have a great teacher, you won’t learn nearly as much.

Our Dean Avi Flombaum gets inspired by this quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupery, author of The Little Prince.

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.”

The only way to truly connect with programming is to fall in love with it. This is the guiding force behind everything we do, from teaching the history of code, to bringing in guest speakers, to building real-world applications. If we can get students to fall in love with programming, the way our teachers have, they’ll never give up. Theyll continue to push the boundaries of their own knowledge and continue to get better.
