Inside Our Denver Classroom with Lead Instructor, Kyle

Posted by Flatiron School on December 12, 2019

Our teachers are the heart and soul of our classrooms, our campuses, and the Flatiron School experience. Learning to code is no easy feat—and Flatiron School’s instructors bring technical expertise, academic training, and passionate commitment to helping our students.

Our Denver campus, located in the bustling RiNo district nearby many start-ups, has taught almost a hundred Denverites software engineering since its opening last year. To celebrate our year anniversary, we caught up with one of Denver’s lead instructors, Kyle, to learn about his background, journey to code, and his experience teaching at Flatiron School.

Q: What is your background in technology?

Kyle: I studied information systems at Metropolitan State University and Engineering Management at Colorado University Boulder, but those schools don’t really teach software engineering so I was self-taught at that. I was a full-stack developer at several education and EdTech companies before transitioning to Flatiron School.

Q: What is your role at Flatiron School?

Kyle: I oversee the technical and educational aspects of Flatiron School. Most importantly, we help students learn how to learn so they maintain a strong trajectory throughout their career. I was brought on because of my success educating hundreds of new developers in this community over the past few years. I was tasked with shaping the school’s local student and staff culture.

Q: What makes Flatiron School special?

Kyle: I’m continually impressed by the quality of career services at Flatiron School. The coaching, accountability, opportunities, and personalization of career support that comes after graduation is completely unrivaled, and is a really strong complement to the technical aspects of the program.

Q: Beyond Flatiron School, how else are you involved with the Denver community?

Kyle: I’m the Executive Director of an organization called Develop Denver, that educates and connects the broader technology community. We host events throughout the year, including our annual conference that brings together developers, designers, and anyone looking to dive deeper into tech.
