At Flatiron School, we believe that hiring based on skills rather than traditional pedigree is the future. This philosophy aligns perfectly with our partnership with Tear the Paper Ceiling, a groundbreaking campaign led by Opportunity@Work and the Ad Council. This initiative unites STARs—workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes rather than a bachelor’s degree—and forward-thinking companies to create a more equitable future of work.
Tear the Paper Ceiling is more than just a campaign; it’s a movement supported by more than 70 national organizations, including some of America’s most respected companies, philanthropies, and workforce development organizations. Together, we are working to dismantle the barriers that prevent STARs from realizing their full potential in the job market.
A Commitment To Skills-Based Hiring
Our partnership with Tear the Paper Ceiling reflects a shared commitment to skills-based hiring. Over the past three years, 426 Flatiron School graduates without a college degree have secured jobs in the tech industry, proving that talent and hard work are what truly matter.* These graduates have stepped into roles across various job functions, demonstrating that with the right skills, the sky’s the limit.
The financial success of these STARs is a testament to the value they bring. Among the 236 Flatiron School graduates who accepted full-time salaried positions and disclosed their compensation, the average starting salary was over $70,000. Graduates who pursued contract, internship, apprenticeship, or freelance roles reported an average hourly wage of over $28, while part-time roles saw an average hourly wage exceeding $23. These figures highlight the significant opportunities available for STARs through a career change or career launch program like Flatiron School.
The impact on earnings is equally significant. Among the 103 graduates who provided compensation data both before and after completing their Flatiron School program, the average annual salary increase was over $17,000. This not only transforms their earning potential now but also brings a lasting positive impact on their families and communities.
As we continue our work with Tear the Paper Ceiling, we remain dedicated to promoting a more inclusive hiring landscape where skills, not pedigree, determine success. Together, we are reshaping the future of the tech industry and proving that when given the opportunity, STARs can truly shine.
