Flatiron School, a global school that specializes in teaching tech skills like Software Engineering, Data Science and UX/UI Design, will join WeWork’s expanding footprint in San Francisco to help locals launch and develop careers in tech. This is Flatiron School’s first campus in California, and the latest example of the school’s growth since becoming part of the WeWork family.
Flatiron School’s San Francisco campus will initially be housed in WeWork’s 995 Market Street building, while the permanent space is being built out at WeWork’s 1460 Mission Street building in the Mid-Market neighborhood. As Mid-Market continues to evolve, WeWork and Flatiron School are planting roots; bringing member companies, nonprofit organizations, education services and job opportunities to the neighborhood. WeWork’s recent Global Impact Report found that in San Francisco, the WeWork economy has an economic multiplier of 2.3, meaning for every WeWork member, another 1.3 jobs is supported across the city. In total, the WeWork economy supports approximately 39,000 jobs in the city and counting.
“As new members of the Mid-Market community, Flatiron School is committed to creating a job pipeline for residents looking to launch careers in tech, including those traditionally underrepresented in the industry,” said Adam Enbar, Flatiron School CEO and Co-Founder. “Over the years, we have helped students across the globe land their dream jobs in tech, and we’re thrilled to bring that expertise to San Francisco, one of the most innovative cities in the world.”
According to LinkedIn’s Workforce Development Report, San Francisco has one of the most significant skills gap in the U.S. across all sectors, including Software and IT Services. As more companies in the Bay Area demand top tech talent, Flatiron School is uniquely positioned to cultivate and train the next generation tech workforce in the Bay Area. Flatiron School already has a robust network of alumni working for San Francisco based companies, including LinkedIn, Stitch Fix, Apple and many more.
“Flatiron School is the only technical school in San Francisco that provides students with direct access to WeWork’s community of tech companies and entrepreneurs. This network, paired with Flatiron School’s dedicated career coaching ensures students are set up for success in their job search and in the workplace for years to come,” said Flatiron School’s San Francisco Campus Director Kunal Dalal. “We are excited to join the Bay Area to help people launch careers in tech and build a workforce more reflective of the local community.”
At its core, Flatiron School is committed to making tech education more accessible. To support that mission, and reduce financial barriers to education, Income Share Agreements (ISAs) will be available at Flatiron’s new San Francisco campus. The ISA allows students to pay their tuition less an upfront deposit, after they have left Flatiron School and then only after securing annual income of at least $40,000 (calculated as monthly gross income of at least $3,333.34).
Flatiron School creates opportunities for passionate, dedicated people to change their careers and lives through education. One example is Enrique Torrendell, who worked in the restaurant business before graduating from Flatiron School and landing a job as a software engineering apprentice at LinkedIn, through the company’s REACH program; “I knew I needed a career change when I thought about my future children asking if I loved what I did. I worried if I didn’t follow my dreams, I wouldn’t be an inspiration to them, so I took the plunge. After learning to code at Flatiron School, I’m proud to say that I am in a field that I am passionate about, and truly love the work I do.”
“Our roots are growing along Mid-Market,” said Elton Kwok, General Manager of WeWork’s Northern California region. “We know that our success is only as great as our community and are committed to ensuring that businesses and individuals in this area of the City thrive. This includes giving people the access to an education that enables the pursuit of a better life through our Flatiron school; and it’s adjacency to tech companies along Mid-Market couldn’t be more impactful.”
As of today, students can apply for the 15-week Software Engineering course, 15-week Data Science course, and 24-week UX/UI Design course, which all kick off in September 2019.
